Scripture text: 1 John 2:13

2015 Frieda P. Smith

Everybody likes a winner! There is something magnetic about a person or a group of persons who finds ways to win, even when winning appears to be impossible.

I am a fan of professional basketball and football, but I am not a fan during the regular season. I am one of those fans who show up at playoff time. By the time the playoffs begin, I tune in, and generally, I root for the underdog. I tend to side with the team that is predicted to lose, because I know that the reason they made it to the playoff is because in spite of their deficiencies, they found a way to win!

They overcame obstacles to get there!

It was not easy for them—it took hard work, but their hard work paid off!

They made it, because they were overcomers!

In 1st John 2:14, the Apostle John wrote these words, “I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.”

My friends, where you are right now is far from where you have been! When you look over your shoulder—when you hit the “replay button”—you will probably see yourself as the underdog who overcame!

Someone reading this message is still being viewed as the underdog.

People are counting you out.  They see you as a loser.

They never expect you to stop getting high.
They never expect you to get your high school diploma.
They never expect your marriage to work.
They never expect your children to stay out of jail.
They never expect you to get off the couch and get a job.

They have counted you for a failure, but if you have given your life to the Lord Jesus, you are an overcomer!

You may not see us, but we in the stands, rooting for you! Now get up. You can do this!!!

You are an overcomer!
