2015 Frieda P. Smith
Every time I read Matthew 6, while everyone else focuses on verse 33, I always get stuck on verse 26, “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
Birds are known to hang around bus stops, looking for bits of bagels or donuts dropped on the ground, but when was the last time you sat on the bus next to a bird in a three-piece suit carrying a briefcase? You have not and you will not, because birds do not have to go to work every day in order to survive. Jesus said in verse 26, “Your Heavenly Father feeds them.”
If God takes care of the birds, don’t you think He will take care of you, too?
You see, my friends, you are more valuable than a bird. A bird can sing, but a bird cannot share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with someone who needs to be saved. A bird has wings, but it has no arms to wrap around someone who needs to be comforted in a moment of grief.
You are more valuable than a bird.
Come on, you know the song! Sing along with me!
“I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free!
His eye is on the sparrow (that’s a bird!)
And I know He watches me!”
You are more valuable than a bird!
