2015 Frieda P. Smith
Back in the day when I used to play Bid Whist on a regular basis (don’t get deep saints and act like you never played!), when there was another group of players sitting at a table when I arrived, I would say “I got next” and take a seat. It meant one of two things: Either I could replace the first player who dropped out, or once the game was over, I could take the place of the losing team and select a player of my own.
In our text in the Gospel According to John that serves as the foundation for this inspirational message on today, chapter 5 verse 2-4 reads, “Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. (3) In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. (4) For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.”
What I find amazing is that the Bible tells us that a multitude of sick people showed up at this pool, not to swim, but to be healed. They had no idea when the angel was going to make an appearance, but whenever the angel did, they were not going to miss it! Only one of them would be healed, but it did not matter. They all believed they would be “the one” to be healed. So, by faith, they showed up, silently declaring, “I got next!”
I admire these people. They were not home, sleeping. They were not at the mall, shopping. They were not on Facebook, surfing. The angel was going to make an appearance at the pool, so they were at the pool, waiting.
My friends, you cannot announce “I got next” if you are not in an area where things are happening. The people in the text were in the area where the angel came to the pool to move the water. If “the pool” is not “moving” or “stirring” in your area, maybe it is time for you to move to an area where it is. Pray on it.
There are two things I want to leave with you. First, even though there may be a multitude of people around you and all of you are waiting for the same thing, someone has to receive it. Why not you?
Go ahead and declare it.
I got next!
Secondly, if you gave your life to Jesus, even if you get passed over in “the pool”, He can still get you what you need out of “the pool” (read the rest of the chapter!). What a Mighty God we serve!
Whoever this message is for today, get out from under the cloud of discouragement! Cancel the pity party! Get yourself together, get in position, and declare,
I got next!
