2015 Frieda P. Smith
Several days ago, I posted a story on Facebook about a surprise delivery I received from someone who made an anonymous purchase of food from Omaha Steaks. In the box were steaks, ribs, filet mignon, hamburgers, franks, cake, brownies, and potatoes. I was overwhelmed by the person’s generosity and extremely grateful.
Naturally, I wondered who was responsible. Several names came to mind. However, on this morning the Lord dropped this word in my spirit, a word that many of us hear at offering time in our churches on Sunday morning: “Give and it shall be given to you.”
In our text that serves as the foundation of this inspirational message for today, Jesus was teaching His disciples—His followers—when He spoke these words, recorded by Luke in the 6th chapter, 38th verse, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
As I wrote previously, the only time many of us hear this verse is at offering time at church, as if this verse only applies to the money we give to our church on Sunday morning!
However, look at the verse…did Jesus say “Give money, and it will be given to you?” No. Jesus simply said, “Give”.
This, my friends, changes the entire context of the verse. Jesus is telling us that whatever we give—money, time, talent, material goods, etc.—and to whomever we give, it will be given to us!
Take note that Jesus did not say “it might be given…” Jesus said, “It will be given…”
In other words, givers have a guarantee!
People of God, we do not have to sell everything all of the time. Give things away sometimes. I gave a car away years ago. It was a “hooptie” but it was running. One of my friends was hired at a new job and there was no bus service to get there. She could not buy the car because she did not have any money. So, I gave it to her. She drove it until she was able to afford a newer car and then guess what? She gave it back! What did the Word say, “Give and it shall be given to you…”
[Sidebar for the “softies”: Be careful that you do not become a pushover for the “takers” in your life! The “takers” will take everything you offer, ask for whatever you have left, and leave you broke and on public assistance!!!]
My friends, Jesus set the example when He gave His life for us at Calvary. Jesus is a Giver, and He expects us to be givers as well.
Go ahead and give, in church and out of church. Even if you are a professional, give service for free on occasion. If you are buying new furniture and your old furniture is decent, give it away to a needy family instead of selling it.
In due season, when you least expect it, you will be sitting home, minding your own business, and your doorbell will ring, because
Givers have a guarantee!
