2015 Frieda P. Smith
For about three years, I worked as a substitute teacher. I recall taking attendance one day, and I called the names of the students one by one. When I heard them answer, I would look up in an attempt to match a name with a face. I remember calling a name but not getting a response. I called the name again. No response. I called the name a third time. One of the students responded: “She is absent.”
I took my pen and put an X through a little box next to her name. She was absent. She was not going to be a factor in anything that went on during the school day. Whatever was taught, she was going to miss it. Whatever was said, she was not going to hear it. Absent.
There are those reading this message right now who believe the same thing about God. When you call His Name and hear no response, you believe He is absent. Whatever is going on in your life, you believe He is missing it. You do not believe God will be a factor in anything that will go on during the course of your day today.
However, the writers of Psalm 46 have a word for you! Verse 1 reads, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Look at the verse. God is “very present help”. In other words, God is never absent.
My friend, whatever is going on in your life right at this moment, Our Heavenly Father is not missing it. He is going through it with you. He is listening in on your conversations with your creditors. God is sitting in on your consults with your doctors. God knows exactly what is going on. God is not absent. He is very present.
Not only is God present, but verse 1 declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”.
Can we keep it real? There is nothing worse than having someone with you who is of no help to you when you need it! It reminds me of a horror movie…who needs someone with them who is going to do nothing but stand around and scream? If you are not going to help fight, then you may as well leave!
But the Word says God is a present help in trouble! God is not just present, but He is present to help you!
If you have surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you are not alone! God’s presence is with you always. God was present to help Abraham, Job, Noah, Moses, Joshua, Elijah, David, Jehoshaphat, Jeremiah, Daniel, Esther, His only begotten Son, Jesus, Peter, Paul, and countless others before you, and God will help countless others after you are sleeping in your grave.
Whatever you are going through right now, know for certain that God is a very present help in trouble.
God is not a spectator!
