We hear it all the time. Parents bragging about their children’s career choices. “My daughter is going to Yale to become a doctor.”
“Oh really? Well, my son is on his way to Harvard to become a lawyer.”
Imagine stepping into the conversation and declaring, “Both of my children are waiters.”
Waiters? What kind of a career choice is that?
In our text that serves as the foundation of this inspirational message, King David wrote this familiar verse in Psalm 27:14, “Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!”
Although aspiring to become a doctor, a lawyer, a dentist, or president of the USA is wonderful, in order to get there, you are going to need to be a “waiter”.
You see, everything you want or need at any given moment will not always be available, so you will need to learn how to wait.
First, waiting requires training. It looks easier than it is. My daughter Rachelle did it for about one month, and she reported it was hard work. Also, it was literally a balancing act, with many demanding customers vying for your attention.
Waiting also requires patience. Truthfully, it is a lot easier now because all of us have games and gadgets to keep us occupied in the waiting room at the doctor’s office or on line in the supermarket, but twenty games of Candy Crush or Words with Friends will not alleviate the impatience you experience waiting for a phone call for a job interview.
But Glory to God, when you are a waiter on the Lord, the Bible says in Psalm 27:14, “He will strengthen your heart”.
It is your heart that pumps oxygen to the rest of your body’s organs; your body’s organs would shut down without the oxygen your heart pumps to it. What I hear the Lord saying is that when you are a waiter–when you wait on Him–He will strengthen your heart and keep you going, even when you feel like giving up!
Sounds to me like a waiter is an excellent career choice (what do you think?)!
Therefore, regardless of how long it takes, you will endure, because you are a waiter!
You are waiting on the Lord to deliver you!
You are waiting on the Lord to heal you!
You are waiting on the Lord to lead you!
You are waiting on the Lord to guide you!
You are waiting on the Lord to provide for you!
The next time someone asks you what you do for a living, tell him or her, “I’m a waiter!”
A waiter is an excellent career choice!
