Mark 9:14-27

In case you have not noticed, there is a war going on! I am not just talking about the uprising with ISIS; there is a war going on in the lives of the people of God!

As the Bible repeatedly states, spiritual warfare is something all of God’s people have to contend with. It does not matter who we are, who we know, how many church services we attend, or how big an offering we give, all of us are going to have to battle the enemy!

The enemy is destroying families, marriages, relationships, churches, and ministries, right in our faces. Unfortunately, the average Christian is not prepared at all for battle, and it is one of the main reasons why they are easily defeated. [Notice I wrote “they”…Like a professional boxer, I am always ready for a good fight!!!] As a matter of fact, the average person is not only unprepared, but is basically non-expectant, as if the enemy, for some strange reason, is going to bypass them and attack someone else.

In our text that serves as the foundation for this inspirational message, we find Jesus encountering a young boy who had been terrorized by a demon. The father of the young boy approached Jesus for deliverance, and described how the demon had been terrorizing his son. After Jesus responded in Mark 9:23, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes,” verse 25 reads, “Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more.”

First of all, if we are going to defeat the enemy, we cannot go easy on the devil. The Bible tells us in verse 25 that Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit.

The Greek word for “rebuked” literally means, “to set a weight upon.” When we apply weight to something, it is for the purpose of slowing it down or stopping it from moving.

For example, an ocean liner is equipped with anchors. Anchors are weights used to keep the vessel from moving at will. A paperweight keeps paper from blowing.

The World Wrestling Foundation is a sport based on “rebuking”. When two wrestlers are in the ring, the match is officially over when one of the wrestlers “rebukes” the other; when one set his weight upon the other wrestler’s shoulder, pinning him or her to the mat.

The Bible said the Jesus rebuked the devil. Jesus set his weight upon the demon. Jesus set His anointing upon the demon. Being all powerful, Jesus set the weight of His power upon the demon, and rendered the devil unable to move, and unable to operate at will.

Likewise, when Jesus approached the unclean spirit, He did not approach it from a position of kindness and sweetness. Jesus did not go easy on the devil. Jesus threw His weight on him, knowing that under the mighty Power of God, there was nothing the devil could do but retreat.

And I declared to those of you reading this message today who are contending with demons that you cannot play games with them! They have been toying with your life for years. They have been running things in your family at will!

If you want to be rid of them, put your weight on them! Rebuke the spirits that have been terrorizing you!

In Luke 9:1, the Bible declares that Jesus gave His disciples (if you are a believer on and follower of Jesus Christ, then that’s you!!!) power and authority over ALL demons!

Therefore, put your weight on them!

Put the weight of the word of God on them!
Put the weight of the power of the Holy Spirit on them!

You claim you are so anointed! Put your weight on him!

Do not go easy on him! Put your full weight on him, and do not let up!!!

Do not let him talk you into giving him time to get his coat or pack his bags—you know he can’t tell time!!! A few extra minutes can end up being a lifetime!

Put your weight on him and don’t let up!
