School Is In Session

Psalm 25:4

2015 Frieda P. Smith

For those of you who are adults with children, you probably cannot wait for the first day of school. It has been a long summer. You have had to keep them entertained and fed; break up fights and referee arguments. You are happy to hear the news that school is back in session.

Now that your children are headed for the bus stop, what about you? What are your plans?

For a moment, look back over your life. Are you where you believe you should be? Have you accomplished your dreams? Do you believe you are where God purposed for you to be?

In the text that serves as the foundation for this inspirational message, King David wrote these words, recorded in the 4th verse of Psalm 25, “Show me Your ways, Oh Lord; Teach me Your paths.”

In other words, my friends, David is declaring, school is in session!

First of all, if David had to pray to God, “Show me Your ways,” David must have had some “ways” of his own if he had to ask God to reveal His. .

Sounds like you and I, doesn’t it? We have “ways” of doing things. Most of the conflict that takes place in the world is because we have different “ways.” What may be your way of doing something may not be my way. Conflict. What may be my way of handling a situation may not be your way. Conflict.

Although David had his own ways of doing things, David prayed, “Show me Your ways, Oh Lord.” Instead of believing he knew it all—like many of us do—David humbled himself before the Lord and became the student. It was his desire to learn, know, and follow God’s ways.

Likewise, my friend, make it your desire to change your ways and learn God’s Ways.

Finally, David prayed, “Teach me Your paths.”

A path is road or a “selected course of travel.” A path was designed to connect one destination with another. We do not have paths anymore; we have roads and interstate highways. Nevertheless, the key word is “selected”. In other words, it is not the plan of God for us to spend our lives wandering aimlessly down one path and up another, hoping we will end up at the right destination.

Let me see if I can make this live…would you get in your car tomorrow morning without a navigation system and say to yourself, “I’m going to drive to Wichita, KS.,” put the car in drive, pull off, and pray you get there? If you have the sense you were born with, the answer would be no. However, many of us are guilty of being that reckless with major decisions in our lives. We jump on paths with no idea where they are going to lead us; no idea of the dangers ahead.

However, in this season, I decree we are no longer wasting time!

My friend, there is a path that God desires for you to be on. If your National Anthem has been the 70’s hit by the Friends of Distinction, “Going in Circles,” you are on the wrong path!

School is in session!

Get your book—The Bible! “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” (2 Tim 3:16)

Sit down and be quiet—“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)

Study what you have learned—“Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

My friends, God wants to show you something. God wants to teach you something.

Have a seat.

School is in session.
