Believe That You Can Do It!
2015 Frieda P. Smith
Our text that serves as the foundation of this inspirational message is found in the 6th chapter of the Gospel according to Luke. Here in this passage, we find Jesus in the synagogue on the Sabbath, teaching. Verse 6 tells us there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
The Greek translation for the word “withered” literally means “deprived of their natural juices; shrunk; wasted.” In other words, this man had a hand, but because his hand lacked natural fluids, it had shrunk and wasted away.
Of note is that there is no indication that there was anything wrong with his left hand—only his right. Therefore, every time he looked at his left hand and then his right, he was reminded of what was wrong. He had a daily reminder of his handicap. He was reminded on a daily basis of his disability.
There is someone reading this message who is in a similar situation. You have a daily, visible reminder of what once was. Perhaps it is your bank account. It once was healthy and flourishing, but now it has dried up. Maybe it is your marriage; it was once healthy and vibrant, but now it is withered.
Perhaps it is your employment prospects…you have applied everywhere but no one seems to be hiring.
What I also need you to note is that there is no indication of how many times the man was at the synagogue on the Sabbath, but on this particular Sabbath day, Jesus was in the house! I love when Jesus shows up, because things begin to change!
For Jesus said to the man in verse 10, “Stretch out your hand. And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other.”
The man could have looked at his withered hand and said to himself, “There is no point in me trying to stretch this hand. It won’t move. It’s withered. It’s shrunk.” But in obedience, the man believed he could do it! He extended his hand, and his once withered hand was restored whole!
My friend, I dare you to believe that you can do it!
I know your situation looks withered, dried up, and hopeless, but extend yourself!
Yes, your bank account has dried up, but start believing that your account will be full again!
Yes, your marriage has withered, but extend yourself! Believe that your marriage will be restored! Call your spouse and express your love and affection!
Yes, you applied for jobs and have been rejected, but extend yourself! Believe that you will be hired! Apply somewhere else!
Quitting is not an option!
Believe that you can do it! Extend yourself!
