Want Something? Need Something? Ask!

Exodus 12:33-36

Back in the day when I was growing up (I am 58 years old and proud of it!!!), when my mother ran out of something when she was cooking, she did not send us to the supermarket to buy it, she would send us next door to ask one of our neighbors for an egg, a stick of butter, a cup of flour, or sugar. When she wanted or needed something, she asked, and received it.

At some point over the years, things began to change. Now, we get in our cars and drive across town to the grocery store to buy eggs, sugar, or milk. Many of us cannot borrow from our neighbors, because we do not know our neighbors anymore. Even if we do know our neighbors, many of us pretend we do not need anything—we act as if we have everything under control. It seems as if we have forgotten how to ask for what we want or need.

However, I discovered a long time ago if you want something or need something: Ask!

You will be surprised what you will receive if you remember three things that are found in the body of our text for this inspirational message.

[***In the Name of Jesus, we rebuke and cast down every spirit of manipulation and craftiness that will attempt to rise up after reading this message!]

In our text—taken from the 12th Chapter of the Old Testament book of Exodus—the children of Israel were being delivered from bondage in Egypt. The Lord had just released the tenth and final plague, the plague of death of the firstborn.

First, timing is everything. The Egyptians were more than ready for the children of Israel to leave. Exodus 12:33 reads, “And the Egyptians urged the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste. For they said, ‘We shall all be dead’.” They had enough of the children of Israel and their God.

Secondly, they simply asked. Exodus 12:35 reads, “Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing.”

Notice they did not demand. They did not attempt to steal anything from the Egyptians. They did not attempt to barter or trade. They simply asked.

I remember years ago I was visiting a friend’s house and I admired a painting on her wall (I love art). I asked her if I could have it. She removed it from her wall and gave it to me. A friend of mine who was with me could not believe I walked out with the painting.  Yes I did, because I asked, and she gave it to me.

You will be surprised what people will give you if you simply ask.

Finally, the Lord’s pre-ordained favor will have people giving you what you ask for.

Back in the 3rd chapter of Exodus, when the Lord first called Moses to lead His people out of bondage in Egypt, the Lord declared these words, recorded in Exodus 3:21, “And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed.”

Hence, when the time of their deliverance had finally come, the children of Israel asked the Egyptians for what they desired and Exodus 12:36 reads, “And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.”

In other words, God had already ordained favor over the people of God, so when they asked the Egyptians for what they wanted, the Egyptians granted their request!

Someone reading this message needs to grasp this today! There are some things the Lord has already ordained for you, but you are holding up your own process because you will not ask. You are sitting back, waiting for the Lord to drop them in your lap or deliver them by FedEx to your front door.

But if you want something, if you need something, ask!

Do not beg. Ask.
Do not demand. Ask.
Do not manipulate. Ask.
There is preordained favor of God over your life.
There is a job where you and only you will find favor.
There is an assignment where you and only you will find favor.
My sister, you will find favor with a man who has been preordained for you…
My brother, you will find favor with a woman who has been preordained for you…

And one last thing…do not send someone else to ask because God’s favor is not covering him or her. His favor is covering you! The person you send will not get what God has for you!
