God Still Speaks Wherever You Are

Jeremiah 33:1

Our text for this inspirational message was taken from the Old Testament prophetic writing of the Prophet Jeremiah, known as the weeping prophet, because he cried and lamented over the spiritual condition of the people of God, a people who refused to obey the voice of God.

You see, the children of Israel had a great destiny. In the 12th chapter of Genesis, they were destined to be a great nation and promised a land flowing with milk and honey. Their sole requirement—was to love the Lord their God with all their hearts, soul, and might. If they would only put God first and forsake idolatry (the worship of false gods), the blessings, favor, and protection of Almighty God would rest upon them forever.

I need to pause right here, because sometimes we get it a little twisted. There are those who believe that as long as we put God first, we are at liberty to do whatever we please thereafter.

May I speak to the married ladies for a moment? Do you think your husband would be happy being the first in a long list of men in your life? Should he be happy just because he is the one you married and come home to every night after you have been hanging out with the rest of the men in your life all day long?

Guess what? God does not want to be first in long line of the other little gods in our lives, either!

He desires to be the only and only God!

Which brings us back to the events in the text…the southern tribes in the city of Jerusalem were in trouble. Their brothers and sisters in the northern tribes of had already been defeated and had been taken into captivity due to their idolatry.

Now here stood the Prophet Jeremiah, warning the remaining tribes in the city of Jerusalem that they were headed for the same fate. The prophet warned that because of the sin of idolatry, the Babylonian army would defeat them.

Nevertheless, in spite of what they were about to go through, there would be a restoration! Even though they were headed into captivity, the prophet Jeremiah advised that it would only last for a season! The Lord would eventually deliver them!

Unfortunately, some of you reading this message are going through a similar situation. Like the people of God in the text, you refused to listen to the voice of the Lord and now you are in a situation that has you bound.

But glory to God, regardless of what is happening in your life right now, do not give up hope, because God still speaks wherever you are!

Jeremiah 33:1 reads, “Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the prison…”

When the Lord spoke to Jeremiah, the Bible tells us that Jeremiah was in prison…he had been incarcerated on charges of treason, but look at the text…”while he was still shut up in the court of the prison”—while he was still in captivity…before he was released, the Lord spoke to him!

My friend, the voice of God can reach you wherever you are!

Jeremiah was in a physical jail, but that is not your situation. Someone reading this message is “imprisoned” in shame. Someone else is “imprisoned” in financial ruin. Someone else is “imprisoned” in an abusive relationship. But is there a witness out there who knows that one Word from the Lord can release you from what has held you bound?

Ask the man in the 5th chapter of the Gospel of Mark who lived in the tombs. He had been imprisoned by mental illness. He had been screaming and cutting himself with stones. He had been out of his mind, held captive by 2000 demons. But Glory to God, Jesus showed up, spoke a Word that reached him, and the Word set him free!

Regardless of your situation, you need to know that the same Voice that reached the Prophet Jeremiah can reach you wherever you are!

There are people in your life who have stopped speaking to you because of where you are right now. You used to be wealthy, but now that you are in poverty, people have stopped speaking to you. You used to be healthy but now that you are sickly, your friends have stopped calling you. You used to be on the mountain but now that you are in the valley, your family has deserted you.

But I wrote this message to remind you that we serve a God Who will yet speak to us wherever we are! God will speak to us when we are still in captivity…still in sin…still in trouble…still in the valley…still sick…still depressed…still in poverty…still in the struggle…

If you do not remember anything else, remember this: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).  God sent His only Begotten Son Jesus to die for us while we were still in our sin, not after we came out!

In other words, God does not wait for us to get ourselves together before He starts speaking to us. He does not ignore our pleas for mercy and forgiveness and help when we are in the valley. He begins to speak to us, encouraging us to hold on, and reveals to us His plan for our lives.

Be encouraged on this day…

God still speaks wherever you are!
